guppy. The guppy, or “rainbow fish” (Lebistes reticulatus), is also called the millions fish. It takes its name from R. J. Lech- mere Guppy, once president of the Scientific Association of Trinidad, who presented the British Museum with specimens of the species in the late 19th century. A namesake of the guppy is the little guppy submarine, developed toward the end of World War II, but the sub’s name is also an acronym, the first four letters standing for “greater underwater propulsion power.” |
