词汇 | greenhouse effect |
词源 | greenhouse effect. Not a new term, greenhouse effect, despite its current importance, dates back to 1929, when it was first re- corded. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the effect began to concern the public, and it has been a common term ever since. The ef- fect occurs in greenhouses when the sun’s radiant heat passes through the greenhouse glass and is trapped inside, warming the plants there. The term greenhouse effect compares the effect in a greenhouse to the effect on Earth’s atmosphere, in which carbon dioxide and other gases—increasing each year by the burning of fossil fuels—trap Earth’s surface radiation, causing global warming. |
