all she wrote. That’s the end of it, it’s finished. That’s all she wrote is first recorded in 1948 as college slang, but probably dates back before World War II and is now common country- wide. It may have derived from the “Dear John” letters breaking up relationships that some soldiers received from wives and sweethearts while away from home. This appears to be indicat- ed by its use in James Jones’s novel From Here to Eternity (1951), which takes place just before World War II: “All she’d have to do, if she got caught with you, would be to holler rape and it would be Dear John, that’s all she wrote.” |
