Calvary clover. Legend holds that the common trefoil Calva- ry clover (Medicago echinus) sprang up in the foot-steps of Pontius Pilate when he went to Christ’s cross at Calvary or Gol- gotha. Each of the plant’s three leaves has a carmine spot in the center, the leaves roughly form a cross in the daytime, and in flowering season the plant bears a little yellow flower resem- bling a crown of thorns. |
