词汇 | california widow |
词源 | California widow. The common ancestor of American golf widows, football widows, baseball widows, fishing widows, and computer widows, to name but a few species. California widow dates back to the 1850 gold rush in California, when women throughout the U.S. lost their husbands for a year or forever while the men tried their luck or pursued their fantasies in the gold fields. One such widow advertised in a San Francisco newspaper: “Husband Wanted—Whereas my husband has lately left my bed and board without provocation on my part, I hereby advertise for a suitable person to fill the vacancy.” It should be noted that the term American widow preceded all those noted above; it was used in England to describe a woman whose husband had left home to seek a fortune in America. See grass widow; golf widow. |
