词汇 | the bigger they come the harder they fall |
词源 | the bigger they come, the harder they fall. Boxer Robert “Bob” Fitzsimmons (1862–1917) fought and beat many men bigger and heavier than himself, holding at one time or another the world middleweight, light-heavyweight, and heavyweight championships. Fitzsimmons destroyed “Gentleman Jim” Cor- bett with his famous “solar plexus punch” and won the admira- tion of such boxing legends as John L. Sullivan. In 1902, when he was to fight James (Jim) Jeffries in defense of his heavy- weight title, it was pointed out that Jeffries was 50 pounds heavier. “The bigger they come, the harder they fall,” Fitzsim- mons responded. Unfortunately, despite one of boxing’s most memorable bon mots, he lost the fight by a knock-out to Jef- fries, who was also 15 years younger. While Fitzsimmons’s words were original, both Herodutus and Pindar expressed the same sentiment thousands of years before him. Wrote Pindar: It is the lofty pine that by the storm Is oftener tossed; towers fall with heavier crash Which higher soar. |
