词汇 | theater |
词源 | theater. The word theater or theatre comes from the Greek the- atron, a place for seeing. No theater existed in this sense of the word before the planned theaters of the ancient Greeks; all previ- ous plays were performed in such places as temple courts and terraces. The very first theater, so far as is known, was the theater of Dionysus at Athens, the ruins of which can be seen today. It was patterned on “natural theaters” at the foot of hillsides on which spectators stood or sat. Rome’s Colosseum, built in a.d. 180 and covering five acres, was the largest of the classical the- aters or amphitheaters measured by its dimensions and seating capacity, with a total of 87,000 seats. According to The Guiness Book of World Record (1998), Australia’s Perth Entertainment Centre (1976) is the world’s largest indoor theater, with 8,003 seats. See colosseum; young folk of the pear garden. |
