Dr. Johnson believes bonfire was a hybrid word de- rived the French bon, good, and the English fire, reasoning that this fit the definition of bonfire as a fire made for a “cause of tri- umph or exaltation.” But most experts believe the word comes from bone plus fire and originally described a fire made from bones. The word is first attested in English as bane (bone) fire in 1475 and its earliest known ancestor is the Latin ignis ossium, fire of bones.
