词汇 | bodleian library |
词源 | Bodleian Library. England’s Bodleian Library at Oxford is among the greatest libraries in the world. Its name honors founder Sir Thomas Bodley (1545–1613), who devoted nearly 20 years of his life to developing the library. The Bodleian is en- titled under the national Copyright Act to receive on demand a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom. Thomas Bodley, a Protestant exile who returned to England from Gene- va when Elizabeth I ascended the throne, served in Parliament and as a diplomat in several European countries before retiring from public life in 1596. He began to restore the old Oxford li- brary two years later and left most of his fortune to it as an endowment. |
