bollard. A thick, low cylindrical post that combined with other bollards can stop out-of-control cars from crashing into pedestrian areas and is also employed in blocking cars from roads, lawns, etc. The word first described the black posts found on ships and docks used for tying hausers. Bollard derives from bole, Middle English for a tree trunk, and is first recorded in about 1835–40. |
