The term usually means Never-On-Sunday moral laws and may take its name from a nonexistent Connecticut “blue book” ru- mored to contain fanatical laws. The vengeful rumor was spread by the Reverend Samuel Peters, an American Tory who re- turned to England after the Revolution. Peters claimed that the fictitious blue-bound book contained laws prohibiting such ac- tivities as kissing one’s wife on Sunday.
