not written in stone. An expression usually heard in the negative, telling the listener that some plan is not absolutely certain or required, not very difficult to change. It may refer to the two stone tablets engraved with the Ten Commandments delivered to Moses on Mount Sinai (Ex. 20: 1–17), or might re- fer to the finality of a gravestone, among other possibilities. Variations are the expressions not set in stone; not carved in stone; not set in tablets of stone; and not carved in tablets of stone. |
