词源 | nothing on the ball. A baseball pitcher who is pitching poor- ly (giving up hits) is said to have nothing on the ball, the expres- sion dating back to at least 1912, when it is first recorded. Conversely, a pitcher with something or a lot on the ball is pitching well. The first expression is used generally to describe someone who is incompetent, while the latter means someone who has the ability to succeed. |
