Lord God Bird. A name for the ivory-billed woodpecker, a bird once thought extinct that made a dramatic reappearance in April 2005. The bird was once common in the southeastern United States, but disappeared with its vanishing habitat. When it was glimpsed again in Arkansas, people understood how it came to be called the Lord God Bird. With stiff wings and swift flight, people who were lucky enough to spot them would cry, “Oh, Lord God!” |
