Lonsdale belt. An important British boxing belt awarded to a fighter who wins a British title three times in a row. It is named after the earl of Lonsdale, Hugh Cecil Lowther, who was a good enough boxer to serve as sparring partner for American world heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan. Lord Lonsdale died in 1944 at the age of 87. He attributed his long life to “good living,” which included riding to the hounds until a week or so before his death and drinking white burgundy for breakfast every day. |
