词源 | nondenial denial. Government or any official evasion. The expression was made famous by the words and phrases of Pres- ident Richard Nixon’s chief spokesman, Ronald L. Ziegler (1940–2003) known as Zig-Zag to reporters. When Ziegler was asked if U.S. troops were planning to invade Laos in 1971, he advised: “The president is aware of what is going on in South- east Asia. That is not to say anything is going on in Southeast Asia.” The youngest press secretary in U.S. history at 29, he coined the phrases photo-op and third-rate burglary (for Water- gate), among other inventions. |
