nimby. An American acronym that has been common since the late 1980s. It appears to have been coined by American sci- entist Walter Rodger and means “not in my back yard,” refer- ring to objection by residents to the establishment in their neighborhoods of dangerous, unsightly, or other undesirable projects, such as shelters for the homeless, prisons, landfills, and incinerators. The people often don’t mind if such projects are built elsewhere. |
