词汇 | strikeout |
词源 | strikeout. In the American lexicon, to strike out means to fail completely; it is one of the most widely used baseball-derived terms. The baseball strikeout, a combination of three strikes, has been used in the sport since the 1840s. At first strike meant just a missed swing at the ball or a fouled-off ball. There were no called strikes by the umpire until 1863; a strike is called when a ball is pitched within the strike zone (which is the area above home plate between the batter’s knees and his armpits) and the batter doesn’t take a swing at it. See also two strikes against you. |
