Just So Stories. These stories for children about how the leop- ard got his spots, the camel his hump, the elephant his trunk, etc., were published in 1902 by Rudyard Kipling, who became the first English writer to win the Nobel Prize five years later. The imagi- native stories, among the author’s best work, got their title, Just So Stories, because Kipling’s daughter Elsie didn’t care about how un- scientific they were; the little girl wanted to hear her father’s tales over and over, with no scientific explanation added, “just so.” |
