词源 | panga. A large broad-bladed knife similar to the machete that is used in Africa as a weapon or for agricultural purposes, in- cluding cutting brush. This Swahili word is first recorded in the United States in about 1930. As Ernest Hemingway’s son Pat- rick wrote in True at First Light (1997): “The most common ag- ricultural implement in the country was called in Swahili a panga, a heavy-bladed, single-edged sword, stamped from sheet steel in the English Midlands, able to cut brush, dig holes and kill people under the right conditions.” |
