Various American Indian tribes did use paleface as a general term for whites, but they also employed more specific insulting words, including pale-colored-and-scrawny, and spirit-white-and-thin, this last term comparing whites to ghosts. Some writers claim, however, that the word was in- vented by James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851), who certain- ly did popularize the term in his novels. Paleface has also been applied to whites by blacks, and The Palefaces was an or- ganization similar to the Ku Klux Klan that thrived during Reconstruction.
