kunzite. One of the few precious stones named after a person, this transparent, lilac-colored gem takes its name from George Frederick Kunz (1856–1932), an American authority on gems and jewelry who worked many years for Tiffany & Co. in New York City and wrote several books on the subject, often serving as a government expert. Kunzite is a varity of the mineral spo- dumine, which occurs in prismatic crystals. See tiffany glass. |
