词汇 gordon bennett
词源
Gordon Bennett! James Gordon Bennett (1841–1918), the son of the founder of the New York Herald, was an eccentric who ran the paper well but had little or no regard for money. Once he gave a train guard a $14,000 tip. Another time he threw a batch of money into a roaring fireplace to watch it burn but became angry and flung the bills back into the flames when a young man tried to salvage them. When he found someone seated at his favorite table in a Monte Carlo restaurant, he bought the place for $40,000, evicted the diners, sat down to eat—and when he left gave the restaurant back to its original owners as a tip. Bennett had a thing for restaurants. As he strolled through them to his reserved table, he liked to yank ta- blecloths off all the tables in his way. He’d then hand the head- waiter a large wad of cash to distribute to the disturbed and stained diners. He did this so often that the expression Gordon Bennett! became (and remains, in England) a cry of anyone soiled by a clumsy waiter.
