词汇 | black daniel |
词源 | Black Daniel; Ichabod. His black hair and black eyes sug- gested the nickname Black Daniel for the great American statesman, orator, and folk hero Daniel Webster (1782–1852). The name is noted in Stephen Vincent Benét’s story “The Dev- il and Daniel Webster” (1937), which was made into a film. The nickname Ichabod was bestowed upon Webster by John Greenleaf Whittier in his poem “Ichabod” (1850), which ex- presses the Abolitionists’ great disappointment with Webster’s support of the Compromise of 1850. Ichabod means “inglori- ous” in Hebrew, and Whittier later apologized for the descrip- tion, praising Webster’s noble qualities. See godlike daniel |
