Excelsior, or “wood shavings,” derives from New York State’s Latin motto Excelsior, “Yet higher, ever higher.” The word was originally a trademark of the New York-based Excel- sior Mattress Company, which borrowed Excelsior for its name from the State’s Great Seal in 1868 and also applied it to the wood shavings used to stuff its mattresses.
