词源 | last-ditch effort. A fight to the very end. The expression may have been coined by English bishop Gilbert Burnet in his Histo- ry of My Own Time (1715), at least the last ditch part of it. Burnet wrote: “There was a sure way never to see [Holland] lost, and that was to die in the last ditch.” He was referring to soldiers dy- ing while defending the last ditch of an entrenchment. |
