bicycle. Englishman J. I. Stassen coined the word bicycle in 1869. The two-wheeled vehicles were previously called veloci- pedes, among many other names, including the humorous boneshaker because of the machine’s vibrations on the terrible roads of the time. Early bicycles so scared horses on the road that many towns and cities required bicycle riders to dismount when approaching one. See roadhog. |
