Bible Belt. H. L. Mencken invented this term to describe parts of the United States where the literal accuracy of the Bible is widely believed, which of course is not limited to the South, despite the first use of the term: “The Baptist Record, in Jackson, Mississippi, [is] in the heart of the Bible and Lynching Belt” (American Mercury, 1926). More recently the term has been used to refer to any area of religious or moral fervor. |
