词汇 | between you me and the bedpost |
词源 | between you, me, and the bedpost. This is the earliest of the between you, me, and . . . expressions, dating back to about 1830 and meaning “confidentially, between us.” Bedposts were of course part of the often curtained four-poster beds of the time. Other expressions with the exact same gossipy meaning include between you, me, and the barn, first recorded 20 years later, and between you, me, and the lamppost, which prob- ably dates to the 1850s and is similar to you, me, and the gate- post (of a fence) common at about the same time. |
