词汇 | rough and ready |
词源 | rough and ready. This was not only the nickname of General (later President) Zachary Taylor, but the name of a town in Cal- ifornia. Applied to a person, rough and ready means someone who takes things as they come, who works in a rough but prompt and effective way; referring to things, it means some- thing unelaborate, just good enough to serve the purpose. The term arose at the beginning of the 19th century, some time be- fore the duke of Wellington could have invented it at Waterloo by instructing a Colonel Rough there, “Rough and ready, colo- nel!” as the old story goes. |
