词汇 | mustache |
词源 | mustache; ah, your father’s mustache; curse be upon your mustache. Mustache was originally a French word, borrowed by the English at about the time of the Renaissance. Ah, your father’s (or fadder’s) mustache! was a popular rejoinder among kids in the 1940s to 1950s and may date back much further. It means “Sez you!” or “That’s what you think!” Curse be upon your mustache is not from any comedy routine. Apparently, it is an old “derogatory Arab epithet,” according to a New York Times story (3/6/03) by Jane Perlez, reporting from Qatar. There, at a conference of Muslim countries, Iraqi delegate Izzat Ibrahim told the Kuwaiti delegate Muhammed Salah al-Salem al-Sabah to “shut up, you monkey,” adding for good measure, “Curse be upon your mustache, you traitor!” The Kuwaiti’s re- sponse was nowhere near as colorful. He called the Iraqi a hypocrite. |
