词汇 murderers’ row
词源
Murderers’ Row. Still a popular nickname for the batting order of the 1927 New York Yankees, one of the greatest teams in baseball history. The lineup, which “murdered” opposing pitchers, included Babe Ruth, who hit his famous 60 home runs that year; Lou Gehrig (47), Earl Combs; Bob Meusel; and Tony Lazerri. The Bronx Bombers won 110 games in 1927. The phrase Murderers’ Row was, however, coined way back in 1858, according to historian Bill Bryson, who traced it to a sportswriter’s account of a baseball game, his use of the term suggested by “the isolated row of cells containing dangerous criminals in the Tombs prison in New York.” The words have been used generally to describe any group of dangerous people.
