eureka. When Archimedes discovered the principle of buoy- ancy in his bathtub while determining by specific gravity the proportion of base metal in Hiero’s golden crown, he suppos- edly ran naked through the streets of Syracuse shouting “Eure- ka, Eureka!” (“I have found it! I have found it!”) Since the 16th century the term has been used allusively as an exulting cry of discovery. Plutarch tells the story about Archimedes, and it could be true, for the Greeks commonly exercised in the nude, though a naked man running through the streets would proba- bly have been considered immoral.
