词汇 | beefeater |
词源 | beefeater. The popular name of the warders of the Tower of London and the Yeoman of the Guard, all of whom dress in 15th- century uniforms and are perennial tourist attractions. Their name, however, was originally a derogatory term for a well-fed servant, something of a glutton, and three centuries ago the French used it as a contemptuous word for an English soldier. |
