The name of America’s national pastime is first re- corded in 1744 as “base ball” in The Little Pretty Pocket Book as a synonym for the British game of rounders, a direct ancestor of the sport. Another early mention of the name is found in Jane Austen’s Northhanger Abbey (1788) in which the heroine mentions that she played base ball as a child. Around the turn of the century, base ball became baseball in America.
