tor. Tor may be one of the first words spoken in England. Generally held to be a Celtic term used in place names, it may be a remnant of the prehistoric language of Bronze Age people on the island. These tribesmen lacked the writing to record their language but may have used tor as a place name that the Celts somehow adopted. Tor has come to mean “a high rock, a pile of rocks.” See also torpenhow hill. |
