Torpenhow Hill. Torpenhow Hill, a ridge near Plymouth in England, literally means Hillhillhill Hill. The Saxons called it tor, “hill”; the Celts, not knowing the meaning of tor, added pen, “hill,” for the same reason. The Scandinavians added haug (how), “hill”; and finally Middle English speakers, not knowing that all the components of the word Torpenhow meant hill, added a second word hill to the place name.
