tornado. Dorothy, her dog, Toto, and her house were carried off to the land of Oz by a tornado or cyclone in Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz (1900) and the movie made from it (1939). Tornado is used synonymously for a cyclone, a violent funnel- shaped wind located in a small area. Tornado derives from Spanish tronado, “thunderstorm,” and tornar, “turn.” It was so named by Spanish navigators in tropical seas. See hurricane. |
