词汇 | barracuda |
词源 | barracuda. A large, fierce tropical and subtropical fish with fanglike teeth of the genus Sphyraena. Ernest Weekley says the word’s origin is unknown, but suggests the Spanish barrigudo, big-bellied. Others have suggested the American Spanish bar- raco, overlapping tooth, and some say barracuda is a Carib word recorded as early as 1678. Many barracuda attacks on hu- mans are recorded and the swift and voracious fish is much feared by swimmers in the West Indies. Barracuda can be poi- sonous to humans if eaten after the fish has fed on poisonous corals. Barracuda poisoning affects the respiratory system and is said to cause mental derangement. In American slang a bar- racuda can also be a greedy, treacherous, violent person, often a criminal. |
