Many barracuda attacks on hu- mans are recorded and the swift and voracious fish is much feared by swimmers in the West Indies. Barracuda can be poi- sonous to humans if eaten after the fish has fed on poisonous corals. Barracuda poisoning affects the respiratory system and is said to cause mental derangement. In American slang a bar- racuda can also be a greedy, treacherous, violent person, often a criminal.
