photo-op. White House press secretary Ronald L. Ziegler (1940–2003) coined this common term when serving as Presi- dent Richard Nixon’s press secretary, first using it as photogra- phy-opportunity. It means “a news event staged to produce flat- tering photographs,” as the New York Times (2/12/03) put it. Ziegler was also noted, wordwise, for his description of the Wa- tergate break-in as a “third-rate burglary.” |
