A bartender at the New York Players Club is supposed to have run out of olives and gar- nished artist Charles Dana Gibson’s martini with a pearl onion instead, giving us the Gibson cocktail. Gibson was no stranger to such honors. The popular American artist’s Gibson girls ap- peared on the covers of national magazines in the period 1896 to about 1920 as frequently as Norman Rockwell’s work has in more recent times. His pen-and-ink drawings typically depict- ed slender, wasp-waisted beauties clad in sweeping skirts, shirtwaists, and large hats. The well-bred Gibson girls, widely imitated, were the ideals of young men and women alike up until about the end of World War I, when their vogue ended, but their creator remained active until his death in 1944.
