词汇 garlic
词源
garlic. Owing to its resemblance to the leek, garlic, the herb that “makes men drink and wink and stink,” takes its name from the Old English garleac: gar, “spear,” and leac, “leek.” The Romans believed garlic contained magical powers and hung it over their doors to ward off witches, just as some people wear cloves around their necks to protect themselves against colds, diseases, and even vampires. Pilgarlic is an interesting word once used to mean a “baldheaded man.” It takes its name from the early English pyllyd garleke, “peeled garlic,” for someone whose head resembles a shiny peeled garlic bulb. Since many bald-headed men were old and pitiful, the word came to take on the meaning of a person regarded with mild contempt or pity, an old fool or someone in a bad way. See onion.
