| 词源 | strata; Strata Smith. Geologically stratum refers to a hori- zontal layer of material, such as rock, often one of several paral- lel layers (strata) on top of one another. In 1815 William Smith (1769–1839) published 15 huge drawings illustrating his find- ing that strata regularly slant eastward in a slight ascending grade until they end at the Earth’s surface. For his discovery he was pensioned off by the British government and earned the sobriquent “Strata Smith.” |
