词汇 | street numbers and letters |
词源 | street numbers and letters. The numbering and lettering (e.g., Fifth Avenue and 23rd, or Avenue C and 40th) of streets is an American custom probably invented by Major Pierre- Charles L’Enfant when he laid out the plan of Washington, D.C. in 1791. At first condemned by the English as unimaginative, the practice has by now won some acceptance in England. |
