Garden of Eden. Ths most famous garden of all. Calloway has claimed the honor for Bristol, Florida, offering as “proof,” among other evidence, the fact that Bristol, on the banks of the Apalachicola River, is the only place in the U.S. where gopher wood (the Torrey tree) grows, Noah having made his ark of gopher wood. In the 17th century a Swedish profes- sor even wrote a book attempting to prove that the fabled garden had been located in the Land of the Midnight Sun. At Al-Qurna in Iraq, the site of so much recent bloodshed, there is a sign that stands outside a little enclosure around a tree, read- ing: “On this holy spot where the Tigris meets the Euphrates this holy tree of our father Abraham grew symbolizing the Gar- den of Eden on earth. Abraham prayed here two thousand years b.c.” A Garden of Eden is sometimes termed a “Garden of Paradise,” as it is in Ceylon. There, Ceylonese point to the Ad- am’s apple tree (Tabernaemontana coronaria) when claiming their country as the original Eden. The small tree or shrub bears an attractive fruit with a shape suggesting that a piece has been bitten off, and the Ceylonese say that it was delicious be- fore Eve and Adam ate of it, though it became poisonous after their “fall.” See adam’s apple tree.
