词源
English. As the designation for a language English is first re- corded in about a.d. 1000. At the time English contained per- haps 30,000 words. Today the most complete dictionary (Web- ster’s Second International) contains some 650,000 words, but there are probably 5 million to 10 million English words if all scientific and technical terms were included. (We should also remember that there are a vast number of personal names in English. In The Mountain of Names (1985), Alex Shoumatoff reports that an estimated 69–110 billion names have been be- stowed since humans first made their appearance in the world and that 6–7 billion names of the dead are believed to be ex- tinct!). In any case, the average English-speaking person has a vocabulary of about 3,000 words, while a very well-educated or well-read person might have a vocabulary of 60,000 words. Shakespeare used 19,000 to 25,000 different words to write his plays. English for, roughly, the spin on a ball in billiards or base- ball, doesn’t stem from any derogatory American reference to the affectedness or tricky ways of Englishmen, as has often been proposed. It was probably suggested by body English, the way the body gestures or “speaks” when words cannot be found to express an action. The English call this spin “side,” the term used in billiards long before its use in baseball.
