词汇 come out the little end of the horn
词源
come out the little end of the horn. That prolific Canadian word coiner Thomas Haliburton (see Index) may have invented this expression meaning to end in failure, in allusion to the pointed end of the cornucopia or horn of plenty. At least Hali- burton used it in his The Clockmaker; or, The Sayings and Do- ings of Samual Slick, of Slickville (1837–1840): “Can you wonder that people who also keep such an unprofitable stock, come out of the small end of the horn in the long run?”
