词汇 | bamboo curtain |
词源 | bamboo curtain. The bamboo curtain is a term suggested by the iron curtain that means a political and economic barrier between China and noncommunist countries. The policy came into effect when Mao Zedong (Tse-tung) cut China off from much of the free world after winning the Communist revolu- tion. The expression may have been invented at Time magazine, in which it was first recorded on March 14, 1949: “The Com- munist bosses of Peiping dropped a bamboo curtain cutting off Peiping from the world.” Bamboo, of course, had long been a synonym for things Asian. |
