imperial beard. Louis Napoleon (1808–73), nephew of Na- poleon Bonaparte, staged a coup d’état in 1851 that made him emperor the following year. As Napoleon III, the despot reigned until his empire was overthrown 20 years later and he retired to England. While emperor, Napoleon sported a small, pointed tuft of hair under the lower lip that was named an imperial beard in his honor. |
