词汇 | imagist |
词源 | imagist. A poet who employs free verse and the patterns and rhythms of common speech; or one of a specific group of such poets in England, France, and America from 1909–17. American poet Ezra Pound is said to have coined the name while reading his friend Hilda Doolittle’s poems in the tearoom of the British Museum one day in 1912. According to Robert Wernik’s “The Strange and Inscrutable Case of Ezra Pound” (Smithsonian Magazine, 12/95), Pound told Doolittle her poems were excellent: “[He] took out one of his sharp red pencils and shortened a few lines, changed a few adjectives and signed at the bottom ‘H.D., Imagiste,’ with one stroke creating a new school of poetry and conferring upon Doolittle the name under which she appears in the anthologies.” |
